NUX VOMICA
- Active principle – Alkaloids (Strychnine and Brucine)
- Use – Used as paste
- Fatal Dose -50 – 100 mg or 1 crashed seed
- Fatal Period – 1-2 hours

- It acts on anterior horn cell of spinal cord.
- It inhibit ranehaw cells.
- It lower spinal reflex as a result in slight stimulation such as noise, light or even air bridge causes general contraction of muscles.
SIGN & SYMPTOMS
- RISUS SARDONICUS – Contractions of jaw and facial muscles in which the corners of mouth (Face becomes cyanosed with anxious look eyes scary, eye balls prominent and pupil dilated).
- PLEUROTHOTONUS
- OPISTHOTONUS – Muscles become stiff and rigid, the body is arched with only bone of head and heel touching the ground.
- Death is medullay paralysis.
- Mental faculties are not affected.

POST MORTEM FINDINGS
- Rigor mortis sets in almost immediately after death and passes off early
- Seeds may be found in stomach
- Cynosed face, congested face
MEDICO LEGAL IMPORTANCE
- Suicide is rare because death is painful
- Nux vomica seeds are used to destroy cattles
- Homoeocide is rare due to its bitter taste
TREATMENT
- NO SPECIFIC ANTIDOTE
- Move patient to dark room
- Anesthetized by barbiturate
- Stomach wash not with dilute solution of KMnO4
