Role of Susceptibility in Homeopathy: Key to Individualized Treatment

  • Susceptibility is the ability of a living organism to receive impressions and react to internal and external stimuli.
  • It is the foundation of life and is central to disease and cure in homeopathy.

Role of Susceptibility

  1. Life & Health:
    • Fundamental to all vital processes like digestion, assimilation, excretion, etc.
    • Health = Normal susceptibility
    • Restoration of susceptibility is the goal of cure.
  2. Constitution:
    • Individual traits are shaped by genetic, hereditary, and environmental factors.
    • Determines how one reacts to stimuli.
    • Closely related to immunity.
  3. Diathesis:
    • Indicates a predisposition to certain diseases.
    • Represents altered susceptibility that is not yet disease.
    • Helps in preventive treatment.
  4. Manifestation:
    • Signs & symptoms are expressions of altered susceptibility.
  5. Disease Development:
    • Disease arises when susceptibility is disturbed.
    • Loss of adaptation = illness, infection, or immunity compromise.
  6. Cure:
    • Similimum acts by satisfying the altered susceptibility.
    • Cure is the return to normal susceptibility.
    • Homeopathic aggravation is proof of reaction to the remedy.
  7. Remedies:
    • Patient’s susceptibility determines the choice and response to remedies.
    • Most similar remedy = highest susceptibility = best results.
  8. Posology:
    • Dosage depends on susceptibility:
      • High susceptibility → high potency, less frequent dose
      • Low susceptibility → low potency, more frequent dose
  9. Suppression:
    • Suppression doesn’t destroy susceptibility; it pushes it deeper.
    • True cure brings back old symptoms which then disappear permanently.
  10. Development of Susceptibility:
    • Influenced by:
      • Heredity (miasmatic background of parents)
      • Environmental factors (both prenatal & postnatal)
      • Mental & physical factors

Mnemonic for Roles:

Extra Notes (Roberts' View - Vacuum Theory)

  • Susceptibility = a vacuum in the body that attracts what it lacks.
  • E.g., child catching a disease → fills the miasmatic vacuum → becomes immune.
  • Remedy = vibration match to fill this vacuum.
