Displacement of the Uterus: Types, Causes, Symptoms & Homeopathic Treatment

Displacement of the uterus refers to a deviation from the normal anatomical position of the uterus within the pelvic cavity. It can be congenital or acquired due to factors such as pregnancy, pelvic tumors, or surgery.

Types of Uterine Displacements

1.     Anteversion and Anteflexion

    • Normal position where the uterus tilts forward over the bladder.
    • Excessive anteflexion may cause dysmenorrhea or infertility.

2.     Retroversion and Retroflexion

    • Retroversion: Uterus tilts backward towards the rectum.
    • Retroflexion: Uterus bends backward at the isthmus.
    • Causes:
      • Congenital – Weak uterine supports.
      • Acquired – Pelvic inflammation, tumors, post-pregnancy laxity.
    • Symptoms:
      • Low backache
      • Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
      • Menstrual irregularities
      • Constipation due to rectal pressure.
    • Diagnosis:
      • Bimanual examination
      • Ultrasound (USG)
    • Treatment:
      • Pelvic floor exercises
      • Pessary insertion
      • Surgical correction (ventrosuspension, hysteropexy)

3.     Prolapse (Descent of the Uterus)

    • Mild (First Degree): Uterus descends but remains within the vaginal canal.
    • Moderate (Second Degree): Uterus reaches the vaginal introitus.
    • Severe (Third Degree / Procidentia): Uterus protrudes outside the vaginal opening.
    • Causes:
      • Weak pelvic floor muscles
      • Multiple vaginal deliveries
      • Chronic cough or constipation
    • Symptoms:
      • Sensation of something coming down
      • Urinary incontinence or retention
      • Constipation
    • Treatment:
      • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegels)
      • Pessary insertion
      • Surgical repair (Manchester operation, hysterectomy in severe cases)

4.     Lateral Displacement

    • Uterus deviates to one side due to adhesions or tumors.
    • Symptoms:
      • Pelvic pain
      • Dyspareunia
    • Treatment:
      • Removal of adhesions or tumor

Diagnosis of Uterine Displacement

  • Pelvic Examination – Determines position of the uterus.
  • Ultrasound (USG) – Confirms displacement.
  • MRI (if needed) – Identifies fibroids, adhesions.

Treatment & Management

  • Conservative Management
    • Pelvic exercises – Strengthen supporting muscles.
    • Use of a Pessary – Helps reposition the uterus.
  • Surgical Correction (if necessary)
    • Hysteropexy – Uterus is repositioned and fixed.
    • Hysterectomy – If severe and symptomatic.
