Sphere of Action
Acts especially on mucous membranes, producing ulceration, intense burning, and tenesmus, particularly in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. A deeper and more violent form of Mercurius.
General Indications
- More acute, intense, and rapid than Mercurius solubilis
- Rapid destruction of tissues
- Severe inflammation, pain, and ulceration
Mind
- Anxious restlessness
- Irritability and delirium in fever
- Confusion and dullness with prostration
Rectum & Stool
- Intense tenesmus of rectum and bladder — constant, ineffectual urging
- Slimy, bloody, offensive, greenish diarrhea
- Stool is hot, scanty, and passed with burning and cutting pains
- Worse at night, during and after stool
- Tenesmus continues even after stool is passed (Keynote)
- Dysentery with much straining, but only a little blood and mucus
Urinary System
- Painful, burning urination
- Albuminuria
- Scanty, bloody urine
- Tenesmus of bladder, similar to rectum
- May feel as though urine cannot be retained or fully voided
Mouth & Throat
- Gums swollen, ulcerated, and bleed easily
- Salivation: Profuse, offensive, metallic taste
- Throat swollen, dark red, with intense burning pain
- Pain worse from swallowing, especially liquids
- Diphtheria, ulcerated sore throat, with great burning and salivation
Nose
- Acrid, excoriating nasal discharge
- Ulceration and scabs in the nostrils
- Foul smell from nose
Skin
- Ulcers with sharp, defined edges
- Sloughing, gangrenous ulcers
- Erysipelas with intense burning
- Skin very sensitive, hot and inflamed
