Mission Indradhanush is a vaccination program initiated by the Indian government in December 2014 with the aim of providing immunization to all children underthe age of 2 years and pregnant women who have missed out on some or all of the recommended immunizations. The program has since expanded to cover other age groups and vaccines.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number ofthe age of 2 years and pregnant women against seven vaccine-preventable diseases. The program also aimed to reach children who had missed routine immunization. The program focuses on rural and hard-to-reach areas of the country where the immunization coverage was low.
As of March 2021, the Mission Indradhanush program has completed 310 rounds of immunization across the country, providing vaccination to over 3.39 crore children and 88 lakh pregnant women. The program aims to achieve at least 90% immunization coverage by 2020, and the government is continuously working towards achieving this goal.
Mission Indradhanush has significantly contributed to increasing immunization coverage in India, which now stands at around 85% (National Family Health Survey-5). The program has undoubtedly played a crucial role in reducing the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases and improving public health in the country.
