INTRODUCTION
:- It is a deep-acting polychrest remedy
:- Belongs to the mineral kingdom, well known for its action on mucous membranes
:- Acts powerfully on the respiratory tract, sinuses, stomach and joints
:- Secretions are tough, stringy, tenacious, yellow in nature
GUIDING SYMPTOMS
- Discharges are thick, stringy, ropy, can be drawn into long threads
- Affections of mucous membranes with gluey, sticky, yellow-green secretions
- Complaints appear in small spots and shift location
- Punched out, deep ulcers with clean edges (esp. in throat, nose, stomach)
- Pain in small spots, can be covered with a finger-tip
- Post-nasal dripping of thick mucus, hawking in morning
- Crusts in nose, difficult to remove, leave raw bleeding surface
- Sinusitis with frontal headache, worse in cold weather
- Headache in small spots, esp. over eyebrows, relieved by pressure
- Loss of smell with thick yellow mucus discharge
- Gastric ulcer with vomiting of glairy mucus
- Ulcers with symmetrical location, syphilitic background
- Joint pain shifting with stiffness, worse from beer
- Alternating complaints – asthma alternating with skin eruptions
- Rheumatic pain with coldness, worse in morning
MIND / MENTAL SYMPTOMS / PSYCHOLOGY
- Sad, gloomy, indifferent, irritable
- Confused thoughts with inability to concentrate
- Feels worse in the morning; dreads the day
- Desire to be alone, low mental vitality
- Aversion to speaking, dullness
- Delusions of being pursued
- Indecisive and forgetful
- Tired of life, but no suicidal tendency
DISCHARGES
- Discharges are the keynote of this remedy
- Thick, ropy, stringy, can be drawn into long threads
- Yellowish-green, sticky, gluey discharges from nose, throat, chest, uterus, ears
- Post-nasal drip with hawking in the morning
- Discharge adheres firmly, difficult to remove; causes rawness & bleeding
- Offensive, tenacious leucorrhoea, yellow in color
- Ear discharge thick, purulent, and sticky
- Mucus plug in stool, looks like jelly
- Expectoration with cough is glairy and sticky
- Discharges worsen in cold, damp weather and early morning
GASTROINTESTINAL SYMPTOMS
- Tongue thickly coated yellow, especially in the center, with red edges
- Ulcers in stomach with burning pain; vomiting of tough mucus
- Pain localized in small circumscribed areas – can be covered by tip of a finger
- Appetite variable, nausea especially in morning
- Thirst for large quantities of cold water
- Desire for beer, but it aggravates gastric symptoms
- Vomiting of stringy, glairy, sticky mucus
- Diarrhoea with jelly-like mucus, painless or with dull ache
- Constipation alternating with diarrhoea
- Heaviness and fullness in stomach after eating
- Abdomen feels bloated; sensation as if a weight is lying in the stomach
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
- Cough with expectoration of sticky mucus that can be drawn in strings
- Thick, stringy, yellow mucus in throat and chest
- Hoarseness worse in morning
- Sinusitis and post-nasal catarrh
- Feels blockage and heaviness in frontal sinus
- Asthma alternating with skin eruptions
- Feels suffocated in warm rooms, better in open air
FEMALE
- Thick, yellow, ropy leucorrhoea with backache
- Menses irregular, too early, profuse with pain in small spots
- Ulcers on cervix with yellowish, offensive discharge
- Cracks and ulceration in nipples
SKIN
- Deep-seated syphilitic ulcers with punched-out edges
- Dry, scaly eruptions, especially on legs and arms
- Coldness and numbness of skin
- Skin looks bluish or purplish in ulcers
- Crusty eruptions with yellowish discharge
- Burning pain and dryness with itching
FEVER
- Chill begins with coryza and sneezing
- High-grade fever with thick yellow mucus
- Sweat with offensive odor
- Heat stage with headache in small spots, heaviness
- During fever: tongue coated yellow with red edges
- Relief by open air
RHEUMATISM
- Pain in small joints, worse in morning
- Stiffness with crackling, feels better by warmth
- Wandering pains – one joint to another
- Better by heat, motion, pressure
- Pain in small localized areas – tip of shoulder, finger joints
GASTROINTESTINAL
- Ulcers in stomach with vomiting of stringy mucus
- Nausea in morning, emptiness after eating
- Pain in small spots in abdomen
- Desire for beer, but it aggravates
- Tongue – thick yellow coating, dry, cracked
- Diarrhoea with jelly-like mucus stools
