Right Lymphatic Duct: Anatomy, Course, and Clinical Importance

1. Introduction

  • The right lymphatic duct is a short lymphatic vessel.
  • It drains lymph from the right upper quadrant of the body.
  • Much smaller than the thoracic duct.

2. Length

  • Very short – about 1.25 cm (½ inch) in length.

3. Tributaries

The right lymphatic duct is formed by the union of:

  1. Right jugular trunk – drains lymph from the right side of head & neck
  2. Right subclavian trunk – drains right upper limb
  3. Right bronchomediastinal trunk – drains right thorax, lung, and heart

4. Drainage Areas

It drains lymph from:

  • Right side of the head and neck
  • Right upper limb
  • Right side of the thorax
  • Right lung, right side of heart, and part of liver

Termination: Opens at the right venous angle – the junction of:

  • Right internal jugular vein
  • Right subclavian vein
