INTRODUCTION

  • It is a great polychrest remedy.
  • HAHNEMANN SAYS, “Ipecac is a great anti-spasmodic and anti-emetic remedy.”
  • Chief remedy for persistent nausea and vomiting, especially when vomiting does not relieve the nausea.


GUIDING SYMPTOMS

  • Persistent nausea not relieved by vomiting – a keynote.
  • Nausea with clean tongue (Compare: Iris versicolor – coated tongue).
  • Vomiting of food, bile, mucus or blood with intense nausea.
  • Haemorrhage – bright red and active from any orifice (Uterus, lungs, stomach, etc).
  • Loose cough with vomiting – especially in children.
  • Whooping cough with gagging and vomiting.
  • Hemoptysis – blood comes with least effort, accompanied by nausea.
  • Colic around the navel with griping pain and vomiting.
  • Dysentery – with tenesmus and nausea, stools green as grass.
  • Asthma – with constriction in chest, difficult breathing, and nausea.
  • Worse in warm and moist weather.
  • Child becomes stiff, pale, and rigid with blue face during convulsions.
  • Uterine bleeding – bright red and profuse with nausea.

FEVER

a) Intermittent Fever

  • BEFORE CHILL: Nausea and vomiting, tongue clean
  • DURING CHILL: Shivering with nausea
  • DURING HEAT: Flushed face with vomiting of bile or food
  • DURING SWEAT: Exhaustion with continued nausea

b) Remittent Fever

  • Associated with gastric irritation, vomiting, or haemorrhage
  • Tongue remains clean despite serious illness
  • Headache, nausea, and cough present during fever


RESPIRATORY

  • Spasmodic cough with gagging and vomiting.
  • Chest seems full of phlegm, but hard to expectorate.
  • Asthma with rattling of mucus and vomiting after coughing.
  • Hemorrhage from lungs, bright red, comes with least effort.


GASTRO-INTESTINAL

  • Persistent nausea – as if stomach is turned inside out
  • Vomiting of food, bile, mucus or blood
  • Diarrhea with nausea and colicky pain
  • Dysentery – green, slimy, or bloody stools with constant nausea
  • Colic with cutting and gripping pain around umbilicus


FEMALE

  • Uterine haemorrhage – bright red and gushing, with constant nausea
